Australia: Carnarvon mango yields 'drop 50%'

From:abc.net.au Author:Unknown View Times:times Time:2008-1-14

A Carnarvon mango producer estimates the region's annual yields of the tropical fruit will be down by roughly 50%. Gary Gibson believes last November's heatwave may have affected the trees. He says yields of the Kensington Pride variety are especially affected, and R2E2 numbers are also low.

Mr Gibson says the situation is not ideal but has resulted in good prices for producers.
"This year I'd say it's from what I estimate, I'd say it's at least 50 per cent or more down on last year", he said. "At the moment the prices have been reasonable and started off good, I just hope that they can maintain it." Mr Gibson is also concerned some growers in the region repeatedly pick their fruit too early.

He says producers who pick their fruit too early risk putting off consumers. "The same ones do it every year and it's a sad thing because the consumer's getting fruit that's not its true quality or taste and [it] turns them off a bit," he said.
