The strike of rural workers during the last seven days affected the regional fruit activities. Consequences will be different for each product, the Minister of Agriculture from Rio Negro, Juan Accatino, declared yesterday. The most affected region would be the Valle Medio, where the harvest of Williams pears was suspended a week ago. Infrastructure problems were also foreseen because transport routes were blocked in some cases.
Evaluations would be made at the end of the season but Accatino said that the strike caused an immediate lost in the economic activities of the region.
The harvest of Williams pears started yesterday but quality looses are anticipated by growers. Some of the growers confirm that some of the fruit will be only suitable for juices or candies and the rest of the campaign will depend on the development of the plant.
