Tasmania is sending its first major shipment of cherries to the United States today. It is the first of three seafreight container to be sent to the US this year, after a successful trial last season. Lucy Gregg from Fruit Growers Tasmania says the 20 pallets of fruit will take about three weeks to reach American supermarkets.
"Look, potentially this market's huge", she says. "And with our volumes increasing we're going to need significant programs like this one being set up in America. "A 40-foot container contains roughly about 20 tonnes of fruit, so potentially if we do three containers this season that's potentially 60 tonnes, which is quite significant. "So we have the potential to move large quantities of fruit". |
