"The government should not only increase the reference price for a box of bananas but should also implement a system to control the prices of raw materials used in the banana industry", said Paul Gonzalez, president of the Centro Agrícola Cantonal de Machala.
Gonzalez also argues that the expensive raw materials leaves few or nothing to deal in front of the official price. He suggests a list of prices of raw materials in order to get a better control. "Prices are usually decided by the Ministers because producers and exporters don´t get any agreement". Therefore, they should decide on a new price taking into account production costs. Gonzalez quotes as example the cost of fumigation, that is 70 dollars per hectare. Thus, "growers should invest 1400 dollars every month for an area of 10 hectares".
Gonzalez proposed the creation of a Council of Regulation of Raw Materials, it would be able to control prices and watch providers.
