How do you get kids to eat their fruit and veges? Give them a world record to break. Swan Hill is preparing to break a Guinness World Record by making the world's biggest fruit salad. One hundred and twenty volunteers gathered in the local precinct to slice and dice 5 tonnes of local fruit which is to be loaded into a giant fruit bowl and weighed on a set of giant scales.
The project is all about making healthy eating fun and easy across the region. Using all local produce, Event Organiser, Sallie Amy hopes the event will also showcase the range and quality of local food to an international audience. The current record for a giant fruit salad is held by a community in Peru who managed to make an enormous 4.2 tonne salad. Sallie says the volunteers have been working hard and consistent numbers have been seen throughout the day. "It's such a great atmosphere down here," she says. Instructions on how to cut the fruit are posted at each station as all of the pieces must be uniform. Community groups, members of the local Pony Club and even visitors to the region turned up for the event which had cut up 2 tonnes of the juicy stuff by midday.
When it's all done, the record-breaking fruit salad will be full of nectarines, plums, peaches, melons and grapes which has all been donated by local growers will be served as part of Swan Hill's official Australia Day Breakfast on Saturday 26th January. |
