UK: School barra to sell cheap fruit and vegetables

From:eveningtimes.co.uk Author:Unknown View Times:times Time:2008-2-19

A Glasgow school is planning to launch a Fruit Barra to encourage pupils and residents to eat healthily. John Paul Academy in Summerston has teamed up with the Milton Food Project in a bid to offer affordable healthy eating options to people keen to change their diets. The school hopes to open to the public once a week and teach business skills by selling low cost fruit and vegetables.

John Paul Academy's health development officer, Jane Kelly, said: "Healthy eating is a big theme in the school at the moment and we are trying to get the school more involved. "It would open the school to the community and benefit staff who have access to more fruit and veg. "Pupils would get experience handling cash, taking orders and other skills."

The school, with more than 660 pupils and 46 staff, covers the north of the city, and residents in Maryhill, Milton, Cadder, and Possilpark will be invited to drop in to use the Fruit Barra. Michelle Murdoch, of Milton Food Project, praised John Paul Academy.
She said: "We are keen to help the school. Hopefully other schools can follow their example." The school hopes to open the Fruit Barra scheme in March.
