The Virginia Peanut Growers Association says farmers plan to grow more of the legume this year. The group held its 61st annual meeting in Franklin on Tuesday.
Officials say farmers in Virginia grew about 19,000 acres last year. They're expecting 22,000 acres this year, and some are hopeful for 26,000 acres.
Farmers also are looking at ways to promote the product with store displays, classroom information for teachers and samples of peanuts.
The National Peanut Board says peanuts are high in folic acid and great for expectant moms and that people with wheat allergies can now order peanut flour online. |
